Why You Need a Copy of the Farmers’ Almanac

September 25, 2021

Since 1818, the Farmers’ Almanac has been a mainstay for farmers and ranchers across the U.S. This year, they’ve proudly published their 230th edition. That means they’ve been around longer than Oregon or Washington have been states. But the information found in the Farmers’ Almanac isn’t just for folks who own acres of land. It’s for everyone interested in the long-range weather forecasts, growing seasons, first and last frost dates, natural remedies, and age-old advice.

How Do They Predict the Weather 16 Months in Advance?

While the Farmers’ Almanac has been predicting the weather far longer than the National Weather Service, predicting the weather farther out than 10 days is tricky. They do it with what they call an “exclusive mathematical and astronomical formula, that relies on sunspot activity, tidal action, planetary position, and many other factors.”

According to some, the predictions are accurate 80% of the time. While others, including some of the biggest names in weather forecasting, say the Farmers’ Almanac predictions are accurate about 50% of the time. Sure, you can get a better lock on the local weather by watching the daily news for a 5- or 10-day forecast. But only the Farmers’ Almanac can tell you, generally, what the weather will be like six months from now.

It’s worth it for the Frost Dates Alone

In the pages of the Farmers’ Almanac, you’re going to find dates for the first and last frost of the season for our section of North America. Predictions range from Baker to Portland in Oregon and from Seattle to Spokane in Washington.

It's Packed with Downhome Advice and Wisdom

Owning a copy of the Farmers’ Almanac is like having a grandparent around to offer insights into everyday life. There are remedies, recipes, and age-old bits of intuition packed into every annual edition. This one is no different. Plus, these just look great on coffee tables, kitchen counters, and inside tractor cabs.
