In today’s Ag News Roundup, two wolves killed in Northwest Oregon, the effect of today’s high inflation, cattle marketing reform bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, loans available for those in food supply chain, and research grants for winegrowers.

Wolves Culled in Columbia County

In mid-December, two wolves believed to be responsible for multiple depredations were killed. One was believed to have been struck by a vehicle trying to cross a road, while the other was killed with an authorized permit. There was a removal order in place, which has since been withdrawn.

Inflation Hits 39-Year High

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the annual inflation rate hit a 39-year high in December with a Consumer Price Index of 6.8%. It is the worse inflation rate since June 1982, according to experts.

Cattle Marketing Reform Bill Advanced

The 117th Congress has passed HR 5609, a bipartisan bill that will bring more transparency to cattle marketing. The proposed law would require, among other things, that meatpackers report purchase prices. The bill has been sent to the U.S. Senate.

According to Successful Farming, the Food Supply Chain Guaranteed Loan Program, which opened in December, is set to provide up to $1 billion in loan guarantees for those in the middle of the food supply chain. Applications close February 7, 2022
