Every year, hundreds if not thousands of hopefuls make their way to streams, rivers, and lakes in hopes of catching the big one during one of Oregon and Washington’s free fishing days. We’ve put together a quick guide to help you prepare for your state’s free fishing days and what regulations must be followed for a safe and legal time on the water.
Oregon Free Fishing Days
While only those 12 and older need a license to fish in Oregon, each year there are three free fishing days/weekends in the state. During these weekends, you don’t need a license to fish, crab, or clam anywhere in the state. However, area closures, as well as limits and all other regulations still apply.
Free fishing days in Oregon include:- President’s Day Weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- The first weekend in June (Saturday and Sunday)
- Thanksgiving weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)

Washington Free Fishing Days
In Washington, those under 15 don’t need a license to fish. Plus, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) anyone can fish for common carp, crawfish, bullfrogs, or collect relic shells without a license. But each year, the WDFW hosts a free fishing weekend. Often occurring on the second weekend in June, the free fishing weekend allows anglers to enjoy casting without the need for a license, a Vehicle Access Pass, a Discover Pass, or a two-pole endorsement. However, all other rules still apply, such a size limits, bag limits, catch record card requirements, and area closures. Find a location near you that has catch record cards here.
