Opening Your Heart to the Love of Pets

July 26, 2018

Every year, over 3-million dogs are euthanized in U.S. animal shelters. That’s a lot of pets. Thankfully, nearly 17 million people adopt furry companions from those shelters each year, including Coastal employees like John McCullough at our Marysville, Washington location.

Of course, John isn’t the only employee who cares for an adopted a pet. Check out the happy Coastal employee-pet photos below. What sets John apart is the time he devotes to helping find homes for adoptable dogs and cats with Saving Great Animals, a non-profit that rescues, rehabilitates, and re-homes dogs in need.

“We rescue dogs and some cats from over-populated shelters where they might be euthanized,” John said just after helping a Coastal customer find the perfect pellet stove. “Our team of foster families, dog walkers, and other volunteers help these pets find their forever homes.”

Saving Great Animals doesn’t have a physical location, but they do have a website at SavingGreatAnimals.org, along with an army of volunteers.

“We have a volunteer community of over 100 people,” he added. “I am the director of animal security with Saving Great Animals. I do a lot of the background checks and screenings, making sure every home is a good one.”

He went on to recall that most adoptions are approved and the dogs or cats go to a loving home. But once in a while, the pet and home are not a good match. Saving Great Animals, along with other similar agencies, strive to find a home that is happy, healthy, and safe. John is proud to be part of that process.

John, who has been with Coastal since late last year, is also proud to be one of our Hearth Department Managers.

“Coastal is a great place to work. It’s a fun atmosphere and filled with a good group of people.”

When asked about his own pets, he quickly rattled off the names Mr. Wiggles, Bungie, Rudy, Willow, Tango, and Gizmo, adding up to four dogs and two cats.

Saving Great Animals strives to match dogs and dog lovers, having saved over 7,000 lives in the past 12 years. You can help too, by adopting a dog or cat into your family with a special, upcoming event.
