Countdown to Spring: Chores in and Around the House

March 6, 2022

There’s a little bit of farmer in all of us. Whether your place is measured in acres or square feet, the goal is the same. We all want to care for our family, give back, and see things through. As spring approaches, we’ll be reviewing some of the basic chores to get done around your place. This week, we’re covering chores in and around the house.

Gardening with Greta Has the Answers You Need

Check out our feature from Gardening with Greta for January, February, and March. She shares quite a few insights into prepping your garden and getting ready for spring.

Remove the Moss

Even if you don’t live in a rainy valley, moss can grow and cause issues on homes, out buildings, and livestock areas. Physically removing moss works great on asphalt and other walking areas. For the roof, try diluted bleach or other moss-killing agents. Just be aware that these can damage plants and shrubs.

Kill the Weeds

Even in colder climates, weeds can take root in the winter. As things warm up, they’ll begin to pop up all over your yard, along fence lines, around trees, and in fields. The next time you have several days of dry weather, get out there and spray those weed starts with your favorite herbicide.

Clean the Gutters

It’s a good idea to clean out the gutters several times per year. Spring is a great time to remove any of the leaves that found their way into your gutters. Don’t forget to clean out the downspouts too.

Get the AC Ready for Summer

Either hire a service professional or do a quick once over of your air conditioning unit. Remove any debris and double-check that the fuse hasn’t been tripped.

Clean out the Fridge and Freezer

If you have another freezer to store your meat and other food, now can be a good time to defrost your freezer. Discard anything that’s been in the refrigerator all winter long.

Clean Driveways and Sidewalks

A power washer is a quick and easy way to remove moss, algae, and dirt from sidewalks, walkways, and your driveway.

Check the Batteries in Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Simply testing them to ensure the batteries are still working can help you sleep better at night and protect your family. If the batteries need to be replaced, install brand new ones to ensure they last at least six months (when you check them again).

Spring Clean Indoors

If you’re facing a few rainy or wintery days, now is the perfect time to get your spring cleaning done. That way, you’re ready to go out and enjoy the nicer weather when it finally makes an appearance.
