5 Ways to Break-in New Cowboy Boots

September 25, 2022

Whether you’ve owned a dozen pairs of cowboy boots in your life, or you’re considering your first ones, knowing how to get those new boots broken-in can help make them even more comfortable. We’ve put together the top 5 ways to get your boots ready for a day of work or play, including a new pair of Justin boots from Coastal.

Try a Physical Stretcher

A boot stretcher can be a great investment for anyone who wears cowboy boots. First, insert a boot stretcher into each boot and activate it. These stretch the toes and main foot section. Be sure to let it stretch for upwards of 15 minutes. Repeat as necessary.

If the stretcher needs a bit more help, apply stretching spray available at Coastal. Spray the area where it needs to stretch (inside and out), and then stretch your boots again.

Try the Freezer Method

Fill a freezer bag with water and remove the excess air. Then carefully put one bag into each of your boots. Now, put your boots in the freezer overnight. The next day, let the ice melt (be sure the inside of your boots does not get wet). Once melted, remove the bag, put on your boots and wear them for an hour or so with a thick pair of socks. You’ll find they are slightly stretched out and broken in.

Try the Hairdryer Method

Put on several pairs of socks and pull your feet into your boots. Using a hairdryer, heat up the areas around the ankle or anywhere else that needs attention. Then walk around in the boots for at least 15 minutes. Repeat as needed.

Try Working the Leather by Hand

Apply a leather conditioner and then work the leather of your boots by hand. Flex the sole repeatedly, push in the top of the heel, bend the shaft, and flex the seams over and over again until things feel soft and pliable.

Just Wear Them!

Experts and boot aficionados everywhere are firm believers that a well-worn pair of boots are a comfortable pair of boots. The more you wear any new pair of boots, the faster you will break them in for work, chores, or your next trip into town.
