The Unofficially Interesting History of Romeos

July 14, 2023

Back in the early 1900s, Romeos were some of the most popular after-work footwear around. But what made them an American staple? Let’s take a look at the history of Romeos, and why they’re one of the products we love at Coastal.

Hard-Working Guys & Gals Have Always Liked Romeos

According to advertisements from 1928, the men’s Romeo slipper was made from kid leather and available in brown or black. These ‘slippers’ had rubber heels, fleece-lined insides, the traditional elastic sides we know and love today, and were available in sizes 6 to 11 for a whopping $2.95 per pair.

According to some accounts, men who worked in the timber industry would change out of their work boots and into a pair of Romeos as they were transported out of the forest and back to camp. The name of the vehicle that transported loggers was called a crummy. Therefore, Romeos became known as the logger’s crummy shoes.

Similar stories have been told about fishermen, factory workers, coal miners, and any guy who worked hard to put food on the table about 100 years ago.

Romeos have always been the boots guys wore to give their feet a rest while still enjoying protection from the elements and everyday life. Over the decades and woven into the fabric of several generations, Romeos became a staple for workers everywhere. They transitioned from a mere slipper to something of a legend.

Today, most people would see their Romeo boots as a vital pair of footwear – perfect for work, play, the office, or the pasture. Georgia Boots has helped bring the much-loved Romeos to even more hard-working folk with the creation of Romeo footwear for women and kids, including new styles, colors, and levels of weather protection.
