Northwest Rodeo Spotlight: High Desert Stampede

For as long as there have been cowboys and cowgirls, there have been rodeos. These events give focus to both human and animal athletes. The High Desert Stampede out of Redmond, Oregon may be relatively new to the pro rodeo circuit, but already this Central Oregon mainstay has a reputation for bringing in some of the biggest names in the sport. Coastal is proud to be one of the original title sponsors for this annual event.

A Little Rodeo History

After a year of planning, meetings, and a lot of sweat equity, the High Desert Stampede held its first competition in September 2015. When the organizers came to Coastal looking for a title sponsor, we jumped at the chance.

“It feels like it was yesterday,” recalled Joe Clemens, Coastal Marketing Director. “Everyone, from the owner to local management wanted to do all we could to help elevate the High Desert Stampede. It really is an honor to be part of it.”

Less than a year later, the Stampede was part of the ERA Premier Tour, hosting a spring competition. After being sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA), the focus continued with a boost in the cash prizes. Athletes and more took notice. Over the next handful of years, even amid a pandemic, the Stampede was honored with awards, accolades, and record-breaking attendance. Today, it’s the fastest-growing rodeo in the U.S., according to the PRCA.

The Stampede hosts three full performances, plus a rough stock special section. It’s also part of the National Finals Rodeo playoff series. They even have their own royalty with Miss High Desert Stampede.

One of the board members for the High Desert Stampede also happens to work at the Coastal in Redmond. Jerry Bannon, a Central Oregon native, has been involved with rodeo in one way or another for decades and has lent his expertise to make the Stampede what it is today.

“This year, we’re going to have a tailgate viewing tent out front with big screen TVs, beverages, and food,” Bannon said when asked what would be new at the Stampede this year. “It’s already standing-room only in the arena, so these viewing areas will make it a little easier for some folks to see the action.”

The viewing tent will also be available for the after party on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

What is the secret to the Stampede’s success? According to Bannon, it’s the volunteers.

“The hard-working board and some 80 to 100 volunteers make it happen,” Bannon added with a smile. “We all believe in this. I think it shows. It’s a huge event in Central Oregon.”
